Scholarship Guidelines

Please find enclosed information on The Joseph and Terrence Tusan Foundation Student
Scholarship Program for graduating high school seniors and first year graduate students.

The purpose of this scholarship is to assist qualified students with their first year of expenses to
a college, university, trade school or graduate school to help them reach their career goals.
Each awarded scholarship will be in the amount of $1,000. A student pursuing a two or four-
year degree at an accredited college, university, trade school or graduate school in the Fall
2023 semester may apply.

Student applicants must meet, provide, or submit the following requirements:

●  2023 High School or College Graduate
●  College and Course Acceptance Letter for Fall semester of 2023
●  Grade Point Average (GPA) between 2.5 and 4.0 on a 4.0 scale
●  Official transcript
●  Official ACT, SAT, LSAT scores
●  Resume or Bio
●  Extracurricular and Community Activities
●  Two letters of Recommendation - Cannot be a family member
●  Statement of financial need
●  Career goals which will be enabled by higher education
●  Essay - 500-word essay meeting all guidelines, rules, regulations, and submission criteria.
●  Completed application

Interested students, please use the application form provided and advise the high school or
college registrar of the deadline for submission of transcripts and other supporting
documentation.

Scholarship applications will be accepted until January 27, 2023 and awards made on May 30,
2023. Scholarship monies once awarded will be paid directly to the educational institution via
the student's name and ID number.

Scholarship Essay Guidelines

As a part of The Joseph and Terrence Tusan Foundation Scholarship Application process,
please submit an essay that must be a minimum of 500 words and must be solely the work of
the applicant. Plagiarism will result in disqualification. Previously published or awarded material
will not be accepted.

Cover Sheet (must contain the following information):

●  Essay Title
●  Student’s Full Name
●  Street Address, City & State, Zip Code
●  Best telephone number (with area code)
●  Email address
●  Parent/Guardian’s Name & Telephone Number

Format:

●  Microsoft Word; 12 pt. Font (Times Roman or Arial preferred)
●  Double Spaced
●  Margins - 1-1.5 inch on sides, top & bottom

Judging Criteria:

●  Content (responsiveness to the topic)
●  Overall organization, spelling / grammar / punctuation
●  Adherence to the essay rules regarding format and originality
●  Citations may be in the form of in-text parenthetical citations or footnotes

Essay topics:

Please submit an essay on one of the following topics:

1. Violent crimes (carjacking, armed robbery, and murder) are frequently committed by young
juveniles ages 11 to 14 in the US. Why do you think these younger juveniles are participating in
these crimes and what can we do as a society to stop this behavior?

2. If you could travel to any destination in the world for seven days, all expenses paid, where
would you go and why? What would make this the best travel experience of your life?

3. There is renewed interest in space travel, both manned and unmanned exploration. What are
the pros and cons of this renewed interest, and should this be sponsored by the US government
or US commercial funding?

4. What are your thoughts and recommendation regarding immigration for 2023? Going
forward, how should we approach, manage and address immigration in America?

5. Tell the Foundation Board members about yourself, your family, your aspirations, and what
differentiates you from any other applicant; in addition to convincing us why you deserve this
scholarship.
